See all stories on this subject Club unites those who love biking Greetings fellow Oak Lawnians! Now that summer season finally is here, great deals of us move our exercises outdoors. For those of you who are cycling lovers, whether it’s off-road riding, touring or racing, the Bike Psychos Cycling Club welcomes you to check out what the club needs to provide. Bike Psychos has a long history in Oak Lawn and has remained in presence for over 30 years. “Everybody has a piece of info. I wish we had a club historian,” stated Karolina Hogueisson, the club’s current president. As president, Hogueisson not only delights in the cycling lifestyle, she’s also concentrated on broadening membership in addition to including more club flights and programs. Hogueisson said, “The club’s been around a long-time and has a long history in the suburbs and I wanted to rejuvenate and increase membership,” Hogueisson said. “We want to generate devoted members, but anybody can ride with us. We want to have flight leaders like Mikel Whicher and Jim Tomaszewski, who are fearless flight and walking event leaders.” The club fulfills the very first Monday of the month from in March thru November, and there constantly seems to be members who take it upon themselves to organize a winter getaway, whether it be a bike ride (weather condition allowing) or a winter walking. The club seems to be developing into a year-round club, which is excellent for members who have cabin fever. “Whenever I register for a flight, I share it with the club,” said Hogueisson. The club has flights throughout the week and on weekends, including a few camp/bike trips, Hogueisson said. “We have a trip every Thursday constantly at 9 a.m. Frequently, we ride from Lake Katherine in Palos Heights. We also have a night flight on Wednesdays and we’re likewise looking at Monday flights. We wish to accommodate people who can do a 6 p.m. ride,” she said. Club members include newbies to experienced racers of all ability levels and capabilities. “The flights are open to everybody,” Hogueisson said. “We will adjust our speed and route to the group’s capabilities. No one is left.” Hogueisson said she “uncovered biking after many years.” “I bought a bike and began taking a look at different (100 mile) century rides, and encountered other club members, like Mikel Whicher,” Hogueisson said. “I just went to a meeting and we started going over the Century Trip and I wanted to be associated with organizing the club and it’s near my neighborhood.” Bike Psychos will host its yearly Century XXXIV bike ride Aug. 20. The trip, now in its 34th year, begins from Coal City High School, 655 W. Division St. in Coal City. The Century consists of five flight levels: 30, 50, 70, 100 and 124 miles. The flight continues rain or shine and begins between 6:30 -10:30 a.m. Over the years, the Club has actually had anywhere from 350 to 800 participants turn out for the Century, which is open to everyone, including non-club members. Hogueisson encourages anybody who has an interest in discovering more about the club to “come and join us and see what we’re everything about.
