Winter weather can often get the best of us! The cold just makes us want to curl up and snuggle in bed for days on end. However, as winter is the time of some of the greatest holidays, this season should not be the time to put your fitness goals on hold. The following tips can help you get through the toughest of seasons, and will help you keep your fitness momentum going.
- Find a fun activity:
The winter season brings many new and fun outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snow-shoeing, skating and much more. Get out and explore new activities. Maybe even try something you may have never done before!
- Take advantage of all the times the sun shines:
Try to go out and be active while the sun is out. Not every winter day is going to be dark and gloomy. Even if it is cold, bundle up and exercise outdoors, you will be surprised at how awake and alive you will feel playing outdoors in the sun.
- Try yoga:
Yoga is great for getting your blood flowing and will greatly help with boosting your mood. In addition, you will stretch out all your sore sports which will leave you feeling fresh, relaxed and rejuvenated.
- Start your own home gym:
Getting to the gym while fighting the cold outside can feel like a hassle and a chore. Watch and follow a workout DVD, or maybe invest in a treadmill or elliptical. You can even download free workout guides from the web! Whatever you do, be creative and find an exercise that you enjoy doing. Dedicate 15-30min per day to get your body moving!
- Change your state of mind:
Finally, the most important for last! Even if you have never been the greatest fan of the winter season, stay focused on the things you do love about it – maybe it is the snow, or the holidays themselves. Whatever gets you excited use that to change the path of your thoughts when you are starting to feel miserable or groggy.
The winter is not all that bad. Have fun and stay safe this season. After a long day packed of outdoor activities, sit by the fireplace with a big mug of hot chocolate and enjoy the company of your family and friends! While it is important to stay active, enjoying time with the ones you love is what this season and the holidays within it are all about!
